Scuba Diving Boat Trip – 14 April 2024
Cape Town, with its dramatic landscapes and vibrant marine life, is a true diver’s paradise. On Sunday, 14 April 2024, we set out on an exhilarating scuba diving boat trip that delivered everything from stunning reefs to a haunting wreck site.
Dive One: Bakoven Rock
Our day began at sunrise as we boarded the boat, the ocean calm and glowing under the first light of day. Our first stop was the legendary Bakoven Rock, a large granite formation near Bakoven with a dark recess on its inshore side that shelters a wealth of marine life.
Descending into the crystal-clear waters around Venus Rock, we were greeted by a kaleidoscope of colors: vibrant corals, forests of swaying kelp, sandy patches, and schools of dazzling fish. At around 18m, hidden cracks and crevices revealed shysharks, nudibranchs, and a variety of reef life — each discovery fueling our sense of wonder.

Dive Two: The Wreck of the SA Seafarer
Our second dive took us to the wreck of the SA Seafarer, a cargo vessel that tragically ran aground during a fierce winter storm on 1 July 1966. Today, the wreck serves as an artificial reef — a thriving habitat where life flourishes among the steel remains.
Conditions couldn’t have been better: exceptional visibility, a rarity at this site, allowed the ghostly silhouette of the wreck to emerge in full view. Schools of fish darted in and out of twisted metal, and crustaceans patrolled the sandy seabed. Exploring the wreck’s eerie nooks and crannies, we felt a profound respect for the ocean’s dual nature — destructive in its force, yet endlessly creative in how it nurtures life.

As we surfaced after our final dive, the boat was alive with energy and wide smiles. We had witnessed some of Cape Town’s finest underwater treasures in perfect conditions, creating memories that will stay with us long after the salt has dried.
